Dump Truck Financing: What It Really Takes to Get Approved
By Christopher Chavez, Founder — Northwood Capital Group
A clean used tri-axle runs $90,000 to $140,000. A new tandem with a steel body is north of $180,000. Almost nobody in hauling pays cash for that, which makes dump truck financing the deal that decides whether you take the job or pass on it.
Dump trucks underwrite differently than sleeper tractors. The truck is heavier collateral with a deeper resale market, but the work is project-based and seasonal, so lenders look hard at whether you have hauling lined up.
What lenders look at
- Credit profile — the single biggest driver of rate; 620+ opens application-only programs
- Down payment — 10% for established haulers, 20–30% for startups and subprime files
- Truck age and mileage — under 10 years and under 500,000 miles finances easily; older units get shorter terms
- Time in business — two years opens the best pricing, but one-truck startups are financed daily
- Committed work — a signed hauling contract or broker agreement can move a marginal file into approval
Dump truck financing rates and terms in 2026
| FICO range | Down payment | Typical term | Rate range | Documentation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 700+ | 0–10% | 60–84 months | 8–12% | Application only to $250K |
| 660–699 | 10% | 48–72 months | 11–16% | Application only to $150K |
| 620–659 | 10–20% | 48–60 months | 15–21% | 3–6 months bank statements |
| 550–619 | 20–30% | 36–48 months | 20–29% | Statements plus hauling contract |
| Startup / first truck | 20–30% | 36–48 months | 16–26% | Owner credit, CDL, work agreement |
New vs. used dump trucks
| New | Used (3–8 years) | Older (9+ years) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical price | $180K–$260K | $85K–$150K | $45K–$90K |
| Down payment | 0–10% | 10–20% | 20–30% |
| Term available | Up to 84 months | 48–72 months | 36–48 months |
| Rate | Lowest | Moderate | Highest |
| Main risk | Depreciation in year one | Balanced | Repair downtime |
The trap on older trucks is not the rate — it is downtime. A blown engine on a 12-year-old truck stops revenue while the payment continues. If you buy older, keep a line of credit open for repairs.
How to finance a dump truck, step by step
- Decide on the configuration. Tandem, tri-axle, super dump or transfer — this sets price and resale, which sets your terms.
- Prequalify with a soft pull. Know your budget before you leave a deposit on a truck.
- Document your hauling work. Contracts, broker agreements or a GC letter of intent strengthen a thin file.
- Send the truck details. Year, make, model, VIN, mileage and the bill of sale or dealer invoice.
- Sign, insure and fund. Bind commercial auto and physical damage with the lender as loss payee; the seller is paid in 24–72 hours.
Financing with bruised credit
Sub-620 files get approved on dump trucks more often than most owners expect, because the collateral is liquid. What changes is structure: more money down, a shorter term and a higher rate. The practical play is to take the subprime deal, pay clean for 12 months, then refinance into better pricing. Our guide on financing a truck with bad credit covers the same playbook in more detail.
Section 179 on a dump truck
A dump truck used primarily for business is Section 179 property and is not limited by the passenger-vehicle caps. Placed in service before December 31, a $130,000 truck can generally be expensed in full that year even though you financed it with 15% down. See the Section 179 guide and verify with your CPA.
